Kindergarten Newsletter!
2-3-12
Happy CSW! Wow, it was a fun week. The children seemed to enjoy all of the different events and activities. Thank you for helping them participate. They all seemed to have great reports of the week.
Math: This week we continued to work on growing patterns, and we created some patterns with our bodies. We are working on teen numbers, and understanding that the 1 in each teen number means it has one, tens group, and then some more. So 15 is one tens group and 5 more. We also worked on number stories- adding and subtracting. We practiced writing and representing the number 10. Our growing number line is up to 95!
Social Studies: The children watched a video on various service workers, as our theme is workers. We read stories about workers, and played a matching game about community workers. Some of the workers the children learned about were: firefighters, mechanics, doctors, carpenters, bakers, crossing guards, and a shopkeeper.
Religion: We briefly started our next theme about “Church is Good.” We learned that church is a holy place, and that it is God’s home. We discussed that people go to church to worship God.
Reading/phonics: Our letter of the week was Dd. Our genius words were: look, his, was, & as. We worked on some D phonics and read a poem. We read a book on the smartboard and discussed the characters and the setting. The children also worked hard on their genius words, so hopefully they look somewhat familiar J. We practiced writing sentences with genius words we know, with a capital at the beginning only, spaces between our words, and the appropriate punctuation at the end. We also spent some time learning about groundhogs day and made a little craft!
UPDATES/REMINDERS:
-Catholic Schools Week: Overall it was an awesome week! I know it is tiring (trust me…I know J) but it is all worth it. The kids did so great and really enjoyed themselves. The kids did some super awesome stuff at school this week, and did some great mini courses; I hope they can fill you in! We are so proud and thankful to be a part of St. Dominic School!
-Bowling Trip: Friday is the 100th day of school! Don’t forget to hand in the bowling permission slips and fee of $10.15 per child.
-Valentine’s Day: The children will be able to exchange Valentine’s and such; I will send a note home next week with all of the children’s names.
-Raffle Fee: If you have not handed in your $5.00 raffle fee for the kindergarten auction raffle item, please do so ASAP! It’s sneaking up on us!
-Genius Words: are due on Wednesday.
-Library: We were not able to have library this week because of our CSW schedule.
-Book in a bag: We will have book in a bag on Monday. If your child has not gotten a pizza certificate yet, please send their books back a.s.a.p. so they can read with them with a teacher. The certificates expire mid Feb. I think!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Miss McGillivray
